Cops: 23-Year-Old Murdered After Refusing To Give Up Purse

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A 23-year-old woman and her husband were walking together Sunday evening in Queens when suddenly they were set upon by armed assailants.

Moments later, she was dead from a gunshot after refusing to surrender her purse. Her husband was left to cradle her in his arms.

A metal detector was brought in by Emergency Service Unit cops Monday to assist detectives from the 103rd Precinct in Queens. They were looking for clues that will lead to the arrest of four people who are believed to have killed Rabie Muhammed at around 8 p.m. Sunday. Four people still out there. Which is why, about six blocks away police made a stop. They had a carload of people surrounded.

A video from a nearby camera Sunday night showed two people waiting by a car with a driver inside. When the shooter ran up, and they all jumped in and drove away. The car went through a red light, giving police the excuse they needed to pull everybody out and search. The killers are still out there.

The woman and her husband were walking down the street when she was challenged for her purse. There was a gunshot, which was heard by the owner of a nearby house.

“I was inside with the dog watching TV. And then heard shot: Bang!” the homeowner said.

“I see one of them lied down, one of them awake.”

The one he saw on the ground, was the young wife. The one he saw “awake,” in his words, was her screaming husband, telling him to call for help. Police were digging up his front yard, because they were looking for the head of the bullet for evidence. The homeowner said he thinks the same group robbed him a couple of weeks ago.

“The next block from here. I think the same. Because they have a gun. They come so quietly,” he said.

The killers were said to be covered up with hooded sweatshirts.

“They had the hood on. This up,” he said, indicating they zipped up their sweaters to cover their faces. “So you hardly could see who it is.”

One detective told Guzman, “They targeted this woman and killed her for a purse — in front of her husband. We have to get them off the street. Fast.”

“Even coming home we’re all taking caution. Because you don’t know what’s next is going to happen,” Sabrina Kahn told CBS 2’s Hazel Sanchez.

Sabrina Kahn lives a few houses away from the shooting scene and she’s afraid the heartless suspects will return.

“I hope they catch whoever did this. Because somebody lost their daughter. Somebody lost their wife. And these people, they don’t think. What would make you do something like that?” Kahn said.

Police said they may soon release that video which caught the suspects running.

As a proud black american, I am appalled by the violence in the streets and I too wish more people would arm themselves and that laws would allow for carrying a concealed weapon AT ALL TIMES!! Look, we have all these gun laws but the “bad guys” get the guns like candy and waiting to prey on the lawful UNARMED folks. I’m sick of this S#$%!!! I’m not NRA member but I know a lot of black folks who share their view whether they are member or not. The person that posted the researched FACTS about crime rates when people are armed vs. rates when people are not is dead on. Ride and die unarmed but ride and live ARMED!!

My heart goes out to the victims family. I live on the block for which the crime occured. This city is returning to the early 80’s it seems, when crackheads were running rampant in this area mugging and killing.

I agree that ownership of firearms is a very big deterent. Even though an armed civilian was not outside at the time of the crime, But what if there was? I know in Texas, you can own and carry a firearm as well as the state having the death penalty in effect. Look at their statistics. Crime is low. Why? Because the criminals think twice about commiting the same kind of crime. Why? Because the victim, or a bystander might be armed that may prevent the crime or the criminal from escaping to kill again.

I have alot of NYPD friends who say, “It’s better to have a firearm and not need it, than to not have it when you do need it”. Do you see or hear of civilians who carry firearms being killed by officers in Texas? But if you wish to carry a firearm, which is by the owners choice, they accept the responsibility of carrying one. But it is their choice. If you do not wish to carry a firearm, then dont.

But this is NYC. You have a better chance of winning the lottery, than being able to have a firearm carry license issued.Or even a home owners license for that matter.

Police are reactive, not really proactive. I know they do the best with what they have to work with. So do all the other public servants such as Firefighters, Emergency Medical Tachnicians, etc.

I just hope and pray that the suspects are caught and punished to the full extent of the law.

So… what exactly happened? Did the police go after the car or not? This is what happens when people who would fail a reading comprehension exam are hired to write news articles.

Be very careful, this sounds like an inside job where the husband setup his young wife to be hit by the mob, and then they assaulted the husband to give himself an alibi. The police should start interviewing the husband as their primary suspect

if i were the cop to find these pieces of garbage, not one of them would make it to rikers in one piece…

  6. Cos says:

The Police are asking NYC citizens – whom the politicians have ‘disarmed’ to prevent this sort of thing from happening – for help…? Does anyone else see the irony in all this? If this couple – or one of their neighbors – were armed, this may have turned out differently and/or none of them would be afraid of the assailant’s return. Instead, they’d be preparing to defend themselves in a concerted effort to avoid something like this from happening again. My prayers go to the family of the victims.

    1. Res Judicata says:

Your logical is clearly flawed. If the couple was armed, the chance(s) of them reacting to a person, who alreay has a gun drawn, is slim to none; unless you’re advocating everyone owning a gun, while walking to have it drawn already, which again, makes your statement not only flawed, but borderline crazy.

Additionally, if “their neighbors” were armed, I don’t see the relevance or what, if any good, that would have done, as the crime took place when there was no witness to the incident (except the husband). The time it would have taken for the neighbor to run inside to grab a gun to ‘confront’ at least 2 potentially armed thugs, most likely would not have stopped the commission of the crime. Again, a flawed statement. If you are advocating the right to bear arms (which doesn’t need advocating as it is already in the amendment) then do it more artfully, but not through a tradegy that would not have been altered if the couple, neighbors, dogs, bug, or whomever, was armed.

      1. Micha says:

Res, I have to agree with you AND Cos. I agree with you that having a gun might not have prevented this poor woman from dying, but her husband probably would have been able to get at least one of them as they turned to run. And we all know that once one is found, they usually role over on the others. At least these guys would be locked up, instead of searching for another victim.

Location of crime is Hollis Queens, 204 st. near 93 ave. and Jamaica ave. Not for anything but I would take a bullet for my wife. This poor young woman took two slugs while her husband remained unscathed? Always tell your loved ones if they are ever presented with this situation, stand behind you, not beside you or in front of you. Cell phones, wedding rings, money, cars and keys can all be replaced. Give it up to the thugs with the weapon. However, if the thug(s) wants to harm your loved one(s) after you have given up your goods, you MUST fight, even to death.

If a robber doesnt get what they want they will kill

  12. Raheem says:

Yes Mr. idiot let the wild wild west begin it appears that even the cops are killing one another. You stupid republicans think carrying a gun will solve everything you’ll get shot by the cops by mistake you thiink they are going approach you and ask why are carrrying that gun no they are goning to shoot first. Ask the other two cops that got killed by police officers one black and just recently a white cop.

    1. Cos says:

Raheem: Look at the numbers… I will be happy to agree with you – just prove your point… Where ever the law abiding are allowed to carry, violent crime is the lowest to non-existent. Where ever people aren’t allowed to carry, violent crime is through the roof. Don’t you see…? By disarming the law abiding you’re providing a ‘target-rich’ environment for the criminal elements. I simply ask you to do some research before spewing the nonsense you’ve heard from the media – which is what anti-gun politicians want you to here. Just do some research is all I ask…

The problem with the article is that it is quoting largely from the video. Play the video, scroll down the article and you will see what I mean. I live in Queens Village and this is just terrible to hear, although, unfortunately, Im not surprised.

  17. Ernesto DIzon says:

If the couple had a gun, they would be still alive, its, not fair for cops to have guns only;but it,s time the general public should have to carry guns too,the times had change ;there are lots of hungry, and homeless people out there, they rob, mug, and shoot with out blinking an eye,so as to feed their famile? but there are different scenario;some do it ,for drugs, but most of the robbers are hungry;with no jobs,no home, except on the streets, and their families lives in cars,or mobile homes,or lean-to-cardbox boxes;I say arm the public;and the robbers would thinktwice ,before commiting a crime, the police are not every where,;and they cant protect you,if they are not around.YES TO GUN,S FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

    1. John says:

Oh here we go again, echoing the NRA’s pet line, ‘Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.’ Really, Ernesto: why don’t we just arm everyone in the US so that cops can no longer know who is the good guy and who is the bad and shoot us all at the first excuse, in order to protect themselves! Back when the country was founded, there was a reason perhaps for some people to carry arms. Now? Only the cops and the military should? But of course, the NRA wields an outsized influence on politicians, so that no one (except billionaires like Bloomberg) can take them and their stupid propaganda on!

      1. John Sans says:

I don’t think these thugs belonged to the NRA..

The crime took place in Hollis, Queens between hillside and Jamaica on 93rd ave. It happened around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday March 13, 2011! The girl was only 23 yrs and its sad to see her life had to end so tragically over a purse. My condolences go out to her family because her life did not have to end that way.

Its sad that there is 4 thugs out on the loose and who knows what there going to do next. You can’t even live peacefully in your own neighborhood no where is safe anymore. There is so much going on in this world from people loosing there lives in natural disasters to bus accidents. If you are not happy with your life style then shoot yourself not an innocent girl or better yet get a JOB!!!! smh
