Gov. Cuomo Staff To Meet NRC Over Indian Point Tuesday

BUCHANAN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Members of Governor Andrew Cuomo's staff were scheduled to meet with members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to discuss shifting Indian Point away from nuclear power.

State officials were turning their attention to the Indian Point power plant in Westchester County after .

Westchester County legislators met with representatives from Entergy Corporation Monday to discuss preparedness plans at the facility, including whether workers could adequately respond to an emergency and the ability of the plant to withstand a disaster.

Board member Michael Kaplowitz said the situation in Japan served as "an opportunity" and "an obligation to plan not panic."

The company insisted its two nuclear reactors were safe from all types of possible calamity.

"We have conditions for earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes and flooding," said Entergy Senior Vice President Ken Theobalds.

Licenses for the two reactors expire in 2013 and 2015.

If they are not renewed, industry insiders say the plant would probably switch to natural gas.
