Meanwhile, Earth Day celebrations will take place across the city this weekend.

At Grand Central Terminal, celebrations will be held both indoors and out, as EARTHFAIR, a festival of art, music and the environment will exhibit local organic food, environmental groups and green businesses.

And in Times Square, Earth Day New York will host a so-called “runway show” of green vehicles.

Yes, cars have gotten less environmentally sound than before. I had a VW Rabbit that got great gas mileage, Also until recently ,had a Saturn that got 39.86 mpg on a long trip.
I see so many people driving such has guzzlers such as the HUMMER, those big SUVs and trucks . Theses people are gas hogs! We should tax anyone buying that size vehicle 50% of the value and put the money towards researching new fuel technologies. If you had to pay an extra $15,000 – 25,000 as a tax on your SUV you wouldn’t buy it.
Time to register? Pay another $10,000 a year to have that HUMMER. Base registration on the weight and mpg fuel efficiency of a vehicle.
Those vehicles getting 45 mpg or more? A $10 registration fee.

Hey, regards to earth day! I wish we could tax gas about 20% (for research!) and then drill our own to get the price down! a win win???

Yes ,I was also there in 1970 that Earth day had much promise largely forgotten now as we pollute even more, of course then in Central Park people smoked
weed openly and some spoke of an age of Aquarius and other nonsense.
Times have changed ,few care anymore and Central Park though cleaner
and prettier is also more boring and lacking in local color and diversity in it’s
