ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Some lawmakers in Albany want a state law to prohibit doctors from wearing neckties in hospitals.

The proposal made Tuesday cites a study that shows bacteria that could lead to serious infection can be carried on ties and other loose-fitting clothing.

The Independent Democratic Conference in the state Senate is calling for the legislation to redress what they consider a fashion emergency.

Republicans have a 32-30 advantage over Democrats in the chamber, but the independent caucus has at times sided with the GOP.

The independent Democrats are Sens. Jeffrey Klein of the Bronx, Diane Savino of Staten Island, David Valesky of central New York, and David Carlucci of Orange and Rockland counties.

This is a common sense issue. Doctors should not wear ties or loose clothing or should cover up with a medical jacket. There is no need for the NY legislature to be wasting their time passing a law that would be hard to enforce.

What an important issue! Things in New York State must be really idyllic that the lawmakers have nothing better to do with their time.

I agree 100% to get rid of ties that certainly carry bacteria. I was recently in Lenox Hill Hospital overnight and was shocked how filthy my shared room was. The TV in the room was not cleaned off in probably a month and the staff just don’t care. Anything that can be done to avoid getting sick in the hospital !

Are the friggin kidding with all the problems New York has this is the one they want to tackle ?

      I agree…typical politcians.

Wasn’t there a reason why they traditionally wear white coats (with nothing else visible) that can actually be boiled during washing?

They should be banned. For EVERYONE. It’s just a racket that sucks up millions of dollars a year that could be better spent elsehwere. I have NOT worn a tie in more than 40 years, and swore years ago, I never would. They look ridiculous and are a huge waste of money and resources. BAN THEM for EVERYONE !
