NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Oy gevalt!

Something’s a bit different about Brooklyn-based Ultra-orthodox Jewish newspaper Der Tzitung’s coverage of the death of Osama bin Laden.

The paper, whose name means “The Time” in English, ran the iconic image of President Barack Obama and key  members of his administration sitting in the situation room as they monitored the raid on bin Laden’s compound. In the shot, Clinton’s hand is covering her mouth.

In the paper’s version of the shot, though, Clinton is entirely absent, having been edited out. Counter-terrorism analyst Audrey Tomasen was also apparently Photoshopped out.

Click here to see the edited photo.

No word yet from the paper why they edited the women out of the shot.

What do you make of the edit? Sound off in our comments section.

Well there’s always the Shania Twain video that has her prancing around Saudi Arabia scantily dressed …don’t think she was actually there… not dressed like that ! there are so many instances of doing this sort of thing in the media.. so what if a Orthodox Jewish sect does not want women’s pictures shown in print. NEXT.!

All that this middle-eastern Anti-Semitism boils down to is fratricide.

They all descended from the same tribes.

They should all get over themselves already, especially the muslim fanatics.
“Does not play well with others,” seems to come to mind.

  3. Robert Frost says:

And what if the ‘real’ photo has her added in?

    Ya never know these days…

And who wouldn’t like to see Hillary erased from our government anyhow?

  4. Jay says:

Such an intelligent response!!! If you check your history books (or any history or religious book) you would learn that Christianity is based in the Middle East also! How about that? Jews, like Christians, have crazy religious zealots that don’t like to see women in power; nevertheless, Israel (unlike the U.S.) has elected women to run the country twice. This country was founded on Judeo-Christian values which did not (early on) embrace the equality of women. Islam, on the other hand, has no place for independent women. Get your facts, or at least some correct, before you so ignorantly rant.

    1. nikki says:

So you must be a Jew! Can’t take criticism, typical! A lie is a lie, no such thing as holier than thy. Get the point? The point was also, the comparison among two with such intense hate. Nothing to do with a Jew/Christian, that was YOUR add, ’cause I never said I was a Christian you just couldn’t handle what was said. So, now who is the real ignorant Jay? BTW, I have friends from all religions!

      I absolutely agree.

In part, the newspaper has issued this rather stunning statement: “Our photo editor realized the significance of this historic moment, and published the picture, but in his haste he did not read the “fine print” that accompanied the picture, forbidding any changes.” That’s ridiculous. That person has no business being a photo editor of a newspaper, because he broke the most basic of ‘rules’ in the industry… you don’t, you cannot, alter a news photo. Period. Of all groups to revise history… are they kidding???
(Does anyone remember the brouhaha over the darkening of OJ’s complexion?)

Women get beaten in Iran, and other “ORTHODOX” muslim countries. I can only assume , that, to be consistent, all of the comments that attack the orthodox jews ‘ paper claim to not print women’s pictures in their paper, MUST really be ticked off that most muslims force their women to be fully covered, and that a large percentage won’t let women even go out with out a male family member as an escort. I say “FORCED” to include all women, because you won’t find one who dresses “western” while here or in Europe, who wouldn’t “cover up” when in the mid east countries.

  11. KPMc says:

Anyone ever find that daughter-raping Brooklyn rabbi that fled to Israel with his equally heinous son yet?

Oh right… that wasn’t just censored from the Orthodox newspapers but from CBS Local too.

Happened back in December… go ahead… see if you can find it at CBS local. You can’t but if you do a Google search you’ll find it at other media outlets.

What a superficial and insulting comment. Really? Is that the depth of your reasoning? Mrs. Clinton’s attire, or her attractiveness did not register for me. She is another PERSON in this room, who happens to be a woman, end of story.

And for those who condemn the so called murder of a dangerous and unrelenting terrorist, what do you propose should be done to protect innocent people?

    1. Dale Auburn says:

The point is not about claims of “modesty” or “respect” for women. It’s about CREDIBILITY in reporting the news.

Editing a person out of a photo is the same as stating that the person was never in the photo – it’s LYING, plain and simple. If a news outlet is willing to lie about who was or wasn’t in a photo, it’s probably willing to lie about other things as well and thus CANNOT BE TRUSTED as a source of information.

      1. bubba-thump says:

actually, I thought the original looked photo shopped, with Obama and Hillary added.

  13. Roy says:

Yes indeed,Hilaries hands are certainly immodest, and should have been removed..just her hands, and head, because she showed real hair that is

  14. Dale Auburn says:

It would have been better if the paper’s editors had just left out the photo. By publishing the alteration, they are explicitly claiming that the two women were never there, which is known to be a lie. If they’re willing to lie about that, what else are they lying about?

This actually puts the paper’s entire credibility in doubt.

The White House released a picture showing the President following “live” events of the apprehension of Osama Bin Laden, last week Sunday. Also present in the Situation Room were various high-ranking government and military officials including Secretary of State, the honorable Hillary Rodham Clinton and another female participant.

Our photo editor realizing the significance of this historic moment, published the picture, but in his haste, did not read the “fine print” that accompanied the picture, forbidding any changes and published a picture omitting the female participants in the room.
Because we wanted to honor the President and our armed forces for the historic significance of the moment, we opted to publish the photo, but without the women included, as is our long standing editorial policy.

Our editorial policies are guided by a Rabbinical Board and because of laws of modesty, does not allow for the publishing of photos of women.

The readership of the Tzeitung believe that women should be appreciated for who they are and what they do, not for what they look like, and the Jewish laws of modesty are an expression of respect for women, not the opposite.

The allegations by some, that Orthodox Judaism denigrates women or do not respect women in public office,is a malicious slander and libel. The Jewish religion does not allow for discrimination based or gender, race, etc.

The current Secretary of State, the Honorable Hillary R. Clinton, was for eight years, a Senator representing New York State with great distinction. She won overwhelming majorities in the Orthodox Jewish communities in her initial campaign in ’00, and when she was re-elected in ’06 it was because the religious community, among others, appreciated her unique capabilities, talents and compassion for all.

We respect all government officials. We even have special prayers for the welfare of our Government and the government leaders.

In retrospect, we apologize for any misunderstanding that this might have caused. We should not have published the altered picture, and we have conveyed our regrets and apologies to the White House and to the State Department.

    1. Dale Auburn says:

“The readership of the Tzeitung believe that women should be appreciated for who they are and what they do, not for what they look like….”

Shouldn’t that apply to MEN, too? Or am I missing something?

    2. Sunne Prevost says:

Roy, are you serious, you suggested that her hands are immodest and her hair uncovered therefore remove her head and hands you are joking right. Because if not you have a real problem. God bless your little heart.

    3. sunne prevost says:

You are so in the wrong. You fired the Photo Editor who is too stupid to read the fine print, right. You can keep your phony apologies because it is obvious you have no respect for America or its values. Go back to where ever hole you came from – a misunderstanding, so we are all so ignore but you and yours, right, what rock do you live under.

I, for one, will asked that your organization be sued for slander and breaking the law; what kind of Jews are you only your way is right. You violated a direct statement, DO NOT ALTER.

“that Orthodox Judaism denigrates women or do not respect women in public office,is a malicious slander and libel, you can say this Ms. Smith and still look at yourself in the mirror.

Hilary Clinton is a top ranking EXECUTIVE in the U.S. government what gives you the right to censure her. Immodest, Hilary Clinton, that statement is immature to say the least. We are talking about a world leader not you or the women in your family.

Your religion addressed only the cast outs, unwanted peoples, and losers from the desert…gypsies. Abram was a carpetbagger and Moses an egomaniac. And you bring this filth to us in a New Land with ties to your silly past or your hateful rules.

You broke the law. You are deceitful. You will be sued.

      Don’t mess with Hilary Clinton!

  18. sk says:

there is a big misunderstanding. yes many ultra-orthodox ppaers don’t show pictures of women, bu that isout of modetsy and respect for woemn. it is not something that is considered degrating towards orthodox women. I ‘m proud to be an orthodox jewsih woman. we are not treated like moslem woemn at all. actually, speaking of Brooklyn! Yes the have laws of modesty, but we don’t cover our faces and are not abused!

    1. Vern says:

Rubbing out women to suit a male-dominated world view IS denigrating and has just received it’s richly-deserved comeuppance. There was probably no woman in their editor’s room to let them know what a bone-headed idea this was.
Can’t WAIT to see the comedy shows tonight!

    2. thebob.bob says:

Altering reality to fit your strange belief that merely being visible is immodest is not a “mis-understanding”. It’s denigrating. Claiming that Muslim women are treated “worse” doesn’t make your “treatment” by Men justified. It’s splitting hairs. The difference between the house slaves and the feild slaves was location and treatment, not status. They were all slaves no matter how well treated.

    3. Dale Auburn says:

The no-photo rule explicitly assumes that all women are sex objects, yet the same assumption isn’t made of MEN. Why aren’t men due the same “respect” and “modesty” as women?

And are you “proud” of your husband’s prayer thanking G-d that he wasn’t born a woman? That always struck me as very guy-centric.

A newspaper, for whatever reason, does not legally get to change a real-time, news photograph. Doing so changes history for their (protected?) readers. If the vision of a woman in the news is so repulsive, or so prohibited, then that editor should either not run the article, or not run the photo at all. Shame on them.

    1. bubba-thump says:

newspapers ROUTINELY crop and photo shop all of their pictures. sometimes they event print them reversed…on purpose. I also saw copies of the photo by other news outlets, and internet sites that cropped out some of the people on the right side of the picture.

      2. Leah says:

@Rodin – Go tell that to the Palestinians? Could you BE any more misinformed??? Go back to the history books Rodin, and look up 1948 and the UN’s decision to create two States – one for the Jews and one for the people who now falsely call themselves “Palestinians” (though they didn’t start doing that until many years later when they saw it would be politically savvy). THEN look at who attacked who, first. Maybe you should think of looking up the following wars, too. I bet you’ll be surprised that the same people keep attacking…

      3. Rodin says:

Apologist! Who asked the Palestinians? The UN/US final solution to the ‘Jewish Problem’ was to dump the displaced European Jews in PALESTINE by decree because no one else wanted them. In return the Jews fell on the powerless Palestinians who had had no part in the holocaust and have relentlessly persecuted them for Israeli expansionist purposes. Jews, after all, are the ultimate revisionists. Read it as you like.

that would leave us with no news media at all. They all lie and slant, and censor, and selectively present what they want to show. If they don’t like a candidate, they most always select a picture that is unfavorable. If they llike the candidate , they select one that makes the candidate look better.

  38. VY says:

The super orthodox of ALL religion oppress and refuse to acknowlegde any woman not engaged in making babies, or in support of those women who are just making babies.
The super orthodox Jews are no different than the super religous Muslims.
Their rules for keeping women down in just baby making rolls are almost exactly the same because they both have the same common origination in the prehistoric life in the middle east.
And yes, they both would like the world to return to the family and religous life people lived in the pre 12th century periods, minus the progumms from the Catholic Church which tried to convert both Muslims and Jews, or kill them.

Just remember, in the modern world, less than 20% of Jewish people are orthodox.
The vast majority of Jewsih people aremembers of the Reformed Jewish movement, the Conservative Jewish movement or the Recontructionists Jewish movement.
So everytime you see a person in a black hat claiming that this or that is based on Jewish Law………NO, it’s based on their ancient view of what they “think” Jewish Law sould be, and the other 80% of NON-orthodox Jewish peolple disagree with them.

    1. Leah says:

@VY – What you say is incorrect. I am not the least bit religious but a lot of my friends are Modern Orthodox and we’ve talked about this issue once or twice. Jewish law is Jewish law. The ultra orthodox may carry some things a bit further, but then the reformed almost don’t carry it at all.

And there is a HUGE difference between orthodox Jews and orthodox Muslims. Just look at Saudi Arabia, home of Islam. The women there are no better than cows—in many cases worse off. And what about women under the Taliban in Afghanistan? Orthodox Jewish women are not treated like possessions, they are not prohibited from driving, learning to read, going out without a male companion. And if a women was to leave the community, she wouldn’t be hunted down and killed or stoned to death.

True, there are some households and even a community or two where you can probably find some oppressed women, but that is the exception, not the rule.

  39. Trish says:

  40. Leah says:

@Anon: Modifying the truth is the same as lying. By editing the photo, Der Tzitung has misrepresented, altered, LIED about who was involved in the incident portrayed therein. They have changed history to match THEIR version. Isn’t that what Moslem terrorists do every day?

If ultra orthodox newspapers have a problem with reporting the facts as they TRULY happen, women and all, then they have no business being in business. And they are no better Al Jazeera, or any rag in Syria, Iran, Egypt, Lebanon, Afghanistan, or Saudi Arabia. They are no better than AP, Reuters, or any leftist publication.

And no, orthodox women don’t wear burkas, and yes, they do go out and work, but if you think that means they aren’t without pressure to conform to certain standards and stay away from certain professions, then you are either completely naive, or in agreement with those practices.

Newspapers – and I use the term so lightly it’s almost floating away – like Der Tzitung, that behave like our enemies, don’t do us any favors. They contribute to the detriment of us all. And if any of the “righteous men” on the staff (oh oh, that term’s going up like a helium balloon) want to know why Mashiach hasn’t come, they can look in the mirror. I’m pretty sure Hashem doesn’t like liars.

Are you referring to the fact that they mostly resemble Joey Ramone?

    2. NYer says:

Wrong! Women cover their hair and wear long skirts and long sleeves to be modest. The idea is to not turn on men as they walk around. Plenty of Ultra-Orthodox women work and they hold almost every position in business you can imagine, many having their own businesses.
The reason the women were photoshopped out of the picture, is that this particular publication does not print pictures of women. Period. If Hilary were president, this paper would not carry a picture of the president for four years!
It’s about giving the men who read this a paper without ‘distractions’.
What I want to know is whether they acknowledged her presence in the article that went with the picture.

      1. Vern says:

There was absolutrly nothing imodest about the 2 women in the photograph.
Perhaps orthodox women of all stripes will finally quit giving credence to the thoroughly discredited idea that women are responsible for men’s bad behavior and inability to control themselves.
By going along they are enabling their own subjugation. We can only hope that this most laughable and ridiculous example will jar some women out of their sad compliance.

  43. Dr. Debbie Weissman, Jerusalem says:

Der Tzitung does not mean “the time;” it means “the newspaper.” “The time” would simply be “Der Tzeit.”
Ultra-Orthodox newspapers generally don’t carry pictures of women.

    1. Don Juan says:

Well then they should choose a different photo — not try to falsify history.

    2. Vern says:

Apparently they would prefer that women did not exist–if you can’t see them they are not there.
