Residents Say Smell, Dust Coming From 2nd Avenue Subway Construction
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Many on Manhattan's east side are looking forward to the day the Second Avenue subway is up and running.
But they're not so happy with some of the odors and dust created by the construction and now some are wondering if the project is safe.
Resident Helena Simon said it has become a nightmare living on Second Avenue and 69th Street. "They blast all day long," said Simon. "The noise is outrageous. You cannot even hear the person you are with."

Simon also said it is so dusty during the construction, you can't even see and she is sure it is impacting her health.
"It's bad, it's terrible," she said. "It is a co-op and people are complaining about the real estate values. They are trying to sell and they can't sell."

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney has written the MTA asking for air tests at the construction site.
Maloney also wants the site sprayed with water to reduce dust and she's calling on the agency to do more to address quality of life concerns.
"Dust and odors from subway construction are irritating, but the MTA needs to make sure they're not a problem to people's health," she said.
Maloney says the MTA has promised to get back to her.
An additional $200 million in federal funding has been released for the project.
