NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — The NYPD said 71 firearms were turned in during a one-day gun buyback program in Brooklyn.

Twenty-three semi-automatic weapons, including a fully-loaded Tec-9, were turned in Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Brownsville. There also were 31 revolvers, seven rifles and shotguns and 10 zip or starter guns.

“A fully loaded assault weapon designed to destroy human life was removed from circulation, and thousands of others collected through the cash for guns program no longer have the potential to kill,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

Under the program, individuals can anonymously surrender firearms in exchange for $200 bank cards for working handguns and $20 for rifles or BB guns.

Gun owners can also turn in weapons anonymously at any police station year round and receive $100.

The Operation GunStop program (1-866-GUN-STOP) also offers rewards up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest of an individual who is carrying, selling or using guns illegally.

Police say turning in guns prevents the weapons from getting into the hands of criminals.

Since the program began in 2008, the city says 6,973 guns have been surrendered to the NYPD.

Everything Bloomberg & Kelly do in relation to firearms is stupid and an assault on our second amendment rights. They don’t care one tiny bit about crime; all thye care about is disarming We The People, with our very own tax money, too!!

What happens to these firearms? They are destroyed! So all the money spent to “buy” them is wasted. If they really cared about crime, then why not re-sell or auction them off back to law-abiding citizens, to at least pay for this program??

Because they just want all of us serfs disarmed, that’s why!

Instead of taking the criminal off the street they take the tool. The criminal can then take the money and get four more illegal guns for the next buyback… no questions asked. Seems like it pays to be a criminal while the laws just get stricter for the law abiding citizens.

Kelly’s comment is pure politics… this programs imply that the guns are all illegal is some way but that is not always true. When folks pass away families often choose to dispose of their guns and this is a viable means to do so. How many have lingered in storage for years, if not decades vs. being in the hands of criminals? It would also be interesting to find out how many of those guns were stolen in the first place… theft is the primary source of weapons in the hands of criminals. Mostly a feel good program that will have no noticeable impact on gun violence and certainly will not impact overall violence.
