BELLPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Officials say a 14-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical but stable condition after he was struck by a Long Island Rail Road train approaching the Bellport station.

LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan said the injured boy, whose name was not released, was hit just east of the station shortly after 4:30 p.m. He was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

The passenger train was the 2:51 p.m. from Montauk due in to Jamaica at 5:50 p.m. Donovan said it was slowing down to make its scheduled 4:36 p.m. stop at Bellport when the boy was struck.

Metropolitan Transit Authority police are investigating to determine why the teen was on the tracks. That location is not a designated crossing.

yup i was just about to say that….what was he doing trying to cross the tracks anyway does he know how dangrous that could be he is really really luckey of the outcome that he had in his case cause most people that cross those tracks don,t even have a chace cause u know what they say about the thrind rail.and they are supposed to have that track blocked off from predestriand anyways.

Typical lack of details and facts on CBS. Newsday reported that this twerp was throwing rocks at cars when he was hit.

In this case, it’s the boy’s fault. You cross at designated crossings, when the bells aren’t ringing and the gates aren’t down, or, if in a rare case the crossing lacks those things, when you can’t hear and/or see a train. Period. Clearly he was crossing illegally. The media always seems to twist it towards the “victim” in these cases. Shame on you.

It’s very simple. Flashing lights and gates down? DON’T CROSS, even if the train has stopped, because another one might be coming on the next track. Furthermore, this kid was NOT at a crossing. STUPID, STUPID media. The railroad tries to make it so simple even the lowest common denominator can navigate the system. The only time someone gets hit by a train is when they are where they’re NOT supposed to be.
