Too much ice cream, too much time in the pool, or too much time in the sun can create sleeping problems, but so too can the heat.

"Sleep hygiene, certainly temperature is very important to control," says White Plains Hospital sleep lab director Dr. Rochelle Waldman. "A cool environment is more advantageous to a better night's sleep."

Sleeping patterns often change during the summer time especially since the sun is up longer. Waldman says getting on a vacation sleep schedule can add to your insomnia.

"They're staying up late with friends and neighbors having barbecues, going swimming. All of that can affect their sleep," she says. "It's important that people have a normal sleep/wake schedule, meaning they go to sleep at the same time approximately every night and wake up at the same time."
