NEW YORK (AP) – Arrests for low-level marijuana possession have fallen 13 percent in New York City, after Police Commissioner Ray Kelly cautioned officers not to bust people for small amounts of the drug found in pockets.

Kelly issued the internal order in September, after claims that officers were wrongly arresting people. In New York, possessing a small amount of marijuana is punishable with a ticket. But having the drug out in public is a misdemeanor.

Department figures show 1,190 fewer arrests were made in the nine weeks since the order, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Before Kelly’s order, arrests had been up.

The Associated Press reported last month that there are about 50,000 arrests for the lowest-level pot bust per year – more than other charge in the city.

Goodness.. they have to stop spending our money on this insane war on a weed that will still be around in abundance after we are all dead and gone.

I’m of an age where I have paid a significant part of my earnings in taxes .. and when I look back to the last 40 years of my paying significant taxes, and I realize that we have spent over 1 trillion (with a T) dollars on this failed war on a weed, and I do the math and I realize there are probably only less than 200 million tax paying adults in the US, and less than half are in any bracket to mention.. but for those who are…

For the last 40 years, a trillion dollars, divided up amongst not that many people.. do the math.. no wonder we are all scrapping.. our hard earned money is being used sooooooo foolishly it makes me want to spit.

Please demand to stop spending our money this way.. they say they have 92 billion allocated for next year alone (including Federal level and Federal monies to the states for state use eradicating weeds)…. we can’t afford such insane foolishness..

What is the legal amount of “small” ?
If it is up to personal evaluation ,then it won’t hold up in court.
If the pot is that is looked at as being small but is laced with angel dust
then it is big and dangerous.
This is what keeps lawmakers busy ,if they ain’t asleep.
