STONY BROOK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — It’s the kind of gift that can vault Stony Brook into the upper tier of public colleges.

WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs On The Story

Hedge fund giant James Simons and his wife Marilyn are donating $150 million – the school’s largest gift since the couple donated $60 million in 2008.

At a time when tuition is rising and state funding always seems to be in jeopardy, the Simons family is funding the construction of a new life sciences building and the endowment of new professorships.

“You’re going to see this economy work, and Stony Brook is going to be a major engine in that economic resurgence,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday.

James and Marilyn Simons are making the generous donation to a university they met at years ago.

As Marylin Simons explained to CBS2’s Jennifer McLogan the couple has a strong personal connection to the school.

“I made many life long friends and even met my husband here,” said Marylin.

“Jim and I still have a close relationship with this school, and it’s great to see it growing, and getting better and better everyday,” she added.

Simons was a math professor at the school before starting a hedge fund where he earned billions. His wife received her bachelor’s and doctorate at Stony Brook.

I heard a condition of the donation was that the school raised tuition. That certainly is not a step in keeping the university open to eveyone.

Stony Brook University today confirmed it has secured a $150 million gift from Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, a donation that school President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. called “a milestone moment in the history” of the university.

Pretty safe to say that the tuition will remain sky-high.

Why not pi s another $150 mil away by giving to blood-sucking Israel or $150,000 each to 1000 illegal aliens??

    Gobble gobble.

Sky-High? Are you kidding me? Of the top 63 AAU research universities in the country – many of which household names …..a, Princeton, Michigan, Chapel Hill, Yale…….STONY BROOK….yes, that’s right Stony Brook- the cost is around $10,000 per year for in state students. There is only one other university in this group of 63 that charges less. Over the last 4 years, NY state has cut SB’s budget by $65+ Million. The stipulation the Simon’s placed was that we are not going to invest in this great university if the State is going to continue to retrack their support of all 64 SUNY campuses by cutting budgets. A pretty savvy business move. There you have it…THE FACTS.
