Workers Discover Cannonball At Governors Island Renovation Site

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Some construction workers made a bizarre discovery on Governors Island Thursday morning.

The NYPD's Bomb Squad had to be called out to a construction site on the island, where an unexploded cannonball was found. They determined that the cannonball was "safe," the Police Department said.

Workers were digging in the water at Governors Island and the cannonball, believed to be from the Civil War time period, was found in dirt that was scooped up by their backhoe, officials said.

Construction and renovation is going on near Soissons Dock, which serves as the main ferry landing for the island and where the cannonball was discovered.

Police said there were no injuries and that no criminality is suspected.
