NYC City Council Set To Discuss Bill On Use Of Unexpired Muni-Meter Time

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- City Council is getting ready to discuss legislation that would let New York City drivers use their unexpired Muni-Meter time when they move to another metered parking spot.

Councilman James Vacca is sponsoring the bill that would allow drivers to hold on to their receipts and park in spaces with the same meter rates.

"There is no doubt in my mind that some day in the very near future, we are going to have this written into law," councilman James Vacca told 1010 WINS Stan Brooks.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn says the bill just makes sense.

"You get what you pay for," Quinn told WCBS 880. "If you put a dollar's worth of time into the Muni-Meter, you get a receipt for a dollar. You go to the dry cleaner and you're only in there for 15 minutes, you drive three blocks away to go to the grocery store and you put your receipt in the window, you got 45 more minutes."

Last month, City Council voted 47-2 to allow for a five-minute grace period at Muni-Meters before officers can issue a ticket.

The City Council will debate the measure at a hearing on April 23.
