Two Rescued From Sinking Boat Off Kings Point

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - It wasn't a hoax after all.

The Coast Guard says they and the FDNY rescued two people from a 60-foot-boat named "Tranquility" that was taking on water off Kings Point.

The confusion about Thursday's rescue seems to be about how two calls for help about the incident were brought to the attention of authorities.

One of the people aboard the vessel sent his mother a photo of himself with Liberty Island in the background. When she saw the photo, she called authorities and prompted them searching there. However at the time, the boat was actually located off Kings Point, where the rescue was made.

Earlier the distress call was being investigated as a possible hoax, since nothing was found near Liberty Island.

The rescue comes more than a week after hundreds of emergency personnel responded to a fake distress call off the Jersey Shore.
