Chris Rock's 'Happy White People's Day' July 4th Tweet Causes Stir

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork.com) - He is a comedian after all.

But some aren't finding one of Chris Rock's tweets very funny.

On July 4, the outspoken comic tweeted, "Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren't free but I'm sure they enjoyed fireworks."

The comment generated instant Social Media buzz. Some of the not-so-positive Twitter responses were as follows: Luckyjoe said, No more of your movies anymore QT, and Libertarian and conservative writer Jeff Schreiber tweetedSlavery existed for 2,000yrs before America. We eradicated it in 100yrs. We now have a black POTUS. #GoF***Yourself.

Another person tweeted, I wonder when @chrisrock became so mean-spirited? Or has he always been and I've just not noticed. Color means NOTHING to me."

Blogger David Burge seemed to turn the tables on Rock with the following tweet: @chrisrock Good one! I bet your Guatemalan house staff got a good chuckle.

Not everyone took offense to the comment. Actor Don Cheadle came to Rock's defense and tweeted the following: Where exactly is the bigotry in that joke? Who is the victim? 18th century whites?

Rock hasn't commented on the tweet and has since tweeted about the Knicks and plugged his movie  '2 Days in New York.'

Where do you stand on Rock's tweet? Funny or divisive? Let us know below.
