NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police have arrested a Brooklyn man involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident.

Two dollar vans were heading north on Flatbush Avenue just before midnight Wednesday night when a pedestrian stepped off the curb and was hit, police said.

1010 WINS’ Al Jones reports

Police said after hitting the man, 34-year-old Peterson Bonaventure’s van ricocheted off several vehicles, injuring three more people before he fled the scene.

When police arrived at the scene on Flatbush Avenue near Hawthorne Street, they found the victim under a parked car.

The man was taken to Kings County Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A man who lives near the crash scene said crossing Flatbush is dangerous because there are no lights.

“You got to just look up and down and hope that nothing passes,” the man told 1010 WINS’ Al Jones.

The man also said the dollar vans race up and down Flatbush Avenue.

A dollar van driver said there is competition to get fares.

“Trying to make a living. Rent a van for $100 a day so you have to make $100, plus the gas. Whatever you have left is profit,” the driver told Jones.

Bonaventure has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
