The victim was stabbed in the torso and the iPhone thief was able to run off with the popular device, police said.

The man was in stable condition at Lutheran Hospital.

A straphanger said these kinds of attacks over smartphones are outrageous.

"It's frightening to sit there and think what's going to happen when the next big thing comes out, because we're sitting there stabbing each other over a phone. A phone," the man told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck.

This is just the latest in a string of Apple product thefts. Police have warned iPhone, iPad and iPod owners to keep the devices out of sight and stay alert on public transportation.
