Red Cross Creates App For Dealing With Hurricane Sandy

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- As the Hurricane Sandy "Frankenstorm" approaches, the American Red Cross has set up an application with instructions for what to do in preparation for a storm, as well as during and after the storm passes through.

The application also has an alert feature from the National Weather Service.

The Hurricane app also features one-touch "I'm safe" messaging so users can reassure family and friends that they are out of harm's way. The message will be broadcast on Facebook and Twitter, the Red Cross said.

The app also allows users to locate Red Cross shelters, and review checklists for a family emergency plan, according to the Droid Guy.

"It has tools that you can use too. If you lose your power; can't find your flashlight. It has a flashlight feature. It has strobe and an alarm feature," said Sam Kille of the Red Cross.

The app is available for the iPhone and Android.
