Extra-Alarm Fire Guts 2 Apartment Buildings In South Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An extra-alarm fire ripped through two adjacent apartment buildings in the Woodstock section of the South Bronx Sunday.

As 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported, the fire broke out sometime after 10 a.m. in an apartment building at 603 Jackson Ave., near 151st Street.

The fast-moving 4-alarm fire swept through the two adjacent three-story buildings, destroying everything for 11 families.

Carmina and her girls had been looking forward to Christmas. After the fire, they were wondering where they were going to live and how they would survive.

"Everything is gone, but we're here," Carmina said. When asked what she would do, she said, "Right now, I don't know. I've got nothing. I don't know."

Anthony had just opened his family's street-level bodega when smoke and flames erupted.

"The fire coming from upstairs, you know, when I saw from where it was coming," Anthony said, adding that his bodega was completely destroyed.

Anthony said the fire moved so quickly that he and his co-workers barely had time to escape.

Three firefighters and two police officers suffered minor injuries. But everyone living in the building escaped without injury.
