Jets To Begin Interviewing General Manager Candidates On Friday
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The Jets -- coming off a disastrous 6-10 campaign -- will likely make many player personnel changes this offseason in an effort to get back to the playoffs for the first time in three years.
But before they can do anything, they need to hire a general manager.
After firing general manager Mike Tannenbaum, owner Woody Johnson needs to find a new man to take over football operations and somehow turn around the mess that the organization has become.
"Mike devoted 15 years of service to the Jets, and I want to thank him for his hard work and dedication," Johnson said in a statement. "Although he helped guide us to two consecutive AFC Championship Games, we are not where we want to be, and a new general manager will be critical to getting this team back on the right track."
And the process of finding a new general manager will begin on Friday.
With head coach Rex Ryan reportedly relaxing on the beaches of the Bahamas, Johnson is set to start interviewing potential general manager candidates on Friday.
Some of the reported candidates to fill Tannenbaum's vacancy include Atlanta Falcons Director of Player Personnel Dave Caldwell, 49ers Director of Player Personnel Tom Gamble, Giants Director of College Scouting Marc Ross and former Browns General Manager Tom Heckert.
"Like all Jets fans, I am disappointed with this year's results," Johnson added in a statement. "However, I am confident that this change will best position our team for greater success going forward."
Ryan has not yet commented on the firing of Tannenbaum.
The team has hired Jed Hughes of the recruiting firm Korn/Ferry as it focuses on landing the most appropriate candidate for the organization.
