WEST ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A 16-year-old boy is in a coma after police said he was struck in a hit-and-run on New Year's Eve in West Islip.

Ryan McCarthy was hit by a car around 10:30 p.m. Monday night on Udall Road and was found lying in the street unconscious, police said.

He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where friends said he remains in a coma, 1010 WINS' Gene Michaels reported.

Some witnesses believe McCarthy may have been deliberately struck.

Rose Krowl, who lives near the scene, said McCarthy was walking with a friend when someone in a passing car started yelling at the two boys.

She claims the driver "passed and then came back at him," hitting McCarthy before taking off.

"We know it was done on purpose," Krowl said.

Witnesses told police they saw a light blue sports car traveling northbound on Udall Road and then turning westbound on Alinda Avenue. The vehicle is believed to have damage to both the driver's side headlight and side-view mirror, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.

"We're just praying for Ryan and praying all is well for he and his family," Krowl said.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the vehicle is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
