Beloved Long Island School Bus Driver Charged With Stabbing Husband

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Elizabeth Marrinan is loved by the students she drives to school every day, but on Monday, the Long Island school bus driver stood charged with attempted murder.

As CBS 2's Carolyn Gusoff reported, the Garden City mother has been accused in the shocking stabbing of her husband.

"Wonderful family, wonderful woman," said a neighbor, Myles Williams. "It comes as quite a shock."

Neighbors could not imagine what went so terribly wrong inside the house at 159 Pine St. in Garden City Sunday. It was dinnertime, and police said Elizabeth Marrinan, 47, plunged a 6-inch steak knife into the chest of her husband, Peter Marrinan, 57.

"We are beyond stunned -- these are the nicest people," said neighbor Theresa Hart. "Liz works at the school district where our kids go."

"Very good neighbors. I'm stunned that something like this could happen," added neighbor Robert Hart.

"Miss Liz," as local kids call her, is a beloved school bus driver in Garden City, and a lunch monitor at the Stewart School. Neighbors said the couple has two college-aged children, and seemed like the typical happy family.

"If you wanted to look that up in the dictionary, you'd find a picture of that family," Williams said. "This was a very normal, happy, loving family -- always has been."

Little in the felony complaint sheds light on the sudden violence. Police said Elizabeth Marrinan confessed, stating: "He lunged at me and grabbed my hair and clawed at my face. I picked up a knife and stabbed him... the steak knife in the kitchen sink."

Peter Marrinan was rushed to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, with a punctured lung and severe internal bleeding. Emergency surgery was performed.

"Pete is just the nicest guy in the whole world," a neighbor said. "Everybody likes Pete."

Peter Marrinan's wife has been ordered to stay away from him. Elizabeth Marrinan on Monday was facing second degree attempted murder charges, and will not be monitoring school lunch anytime soon. She was being held on $1 million bond Monday.

Peter Marrinan's initially reported in critical condition when he was stabbed, but as of Monday afternoon, his condition was upgraded and was considered stable.
