Flatiron District Water Main Break Floods Subway And Streets
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An aging water main broke in the Flatiron District Friday morning, sending gushing water down grates into a subway station below.
The 98-year-old, 36-inch water main broke in the middle of the street at 23rd and Broadway around 10:45 a.m., DEP spokeswoman Mercedes Padilla said.

The broken main sent nearly three feet of water into the 23rd Street station.

Fifth Avenue was also closed for a time between 34th and 23rd streets.
Officials said the water main has been turned off. People in surrounding buildings may experience low water pressure.
According to the Department of Environmental Protection, no one has lost water service as a result of the main break.
The DEP said it provides enough pressure to send water up six stories and that after that, it's up to the individual building to pump it higher.
The flooding was mainly contained to the subway. Officials said the pipe was put there around 1915.
