Long Island Aquarium Launches Naming Contest For River Otter Pups

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center in Riverhead has launched a naming contest for four baby otters born this past weekend.

The otter pups – three male and one female – were born to their proud parents, father Peanut Butter and mother Jelly, on Saturday.

The aquarium has asked people to go to its Facebook page and pick from one of 10 names – most of them inspired by condiments like the names of the pups' parents. The names are Cayenne, Nutella, Butter, Jam, Fluff, Sage, Paprika, Rye, Basil and Tank.

Voting will be open until Sunday, April 14, and the winner will be picked the following day.

The pups are North American river otters – members of the weasel family that are comfortable both in water and on land.

Once found near bodies of water across the United States and Canada, the river otter is now found in the Northwest, the Upper Great Lakes, New England, the Atlantic and Gulf Coast states, and parts of Canada.
