George Washington Bridge Security Guard Accused Of Smoking Marijuana On Duty

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A private security guard working on the George Washington Bridge is accused of smoking marijuana while on duty.

Police from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said they smelled marijuana while conducting a routine inspection of a security booth at one of the bridge's towers on Wednesday.

Guard Sami Omar, of North Bergen, N.J., denied smoking the drug, but police said a search of his post uncovered marijuana in a bag and cigarette.

Omar was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and with being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance.

He works for a private security company that has several hundred guards posted at New York are bridges, tunnels and airports.
