Suffolk PD: Huntington Station Couple Arrested After DWI Crash With Three Kids

YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - A Huntington Station couple went from a baby shower to behind bars following a crash Tuesday, Suffolk County Police said.

Wilver Garcia-Lopez was behind the wheel of the car when it smashed into the front stoop of a home in Greenlawn at around 9 p.m. last night, police said. Garcia-Lopez's wife Dorita DeGarcia and their three kids were in the car at the time of the crash, according to police.

Bruce Aiken told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall that he was in his Greenlawn home with his wife when he saw a flash of light, heard a loud bang and then felt his house shake. When he looked outside, Aiken said there was a car on his front stoop.

"Hit a stump, went airborne. Landed over here somewhere, hit a rock in this garden, turned over, kept rolling and then landed on the steps," Aiken told Hall.

Aiken said the wife got out and started running.

"She just kept yelling at the kids to run," Aiken told Hall. "'Don't call the cops, no police,' he kept saying. And then he got out of the car and just started walking away."

"The neighbors came out and they stopped him," Aiken added.

Garcia-Lopez was charged with a Leandra's Law violation - DWI with a child under 15 in the car - and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. DeGarcia was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

DeGarcia and the kids were treated for minor injuries at an area hospital.

Garcia-Lopez and DeGarcia were set to be arraigned today in Central Islip.
