Jon Niese Placed On 15-Day DL With Partial Tear Of Left Rotator Cuff

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Mets have placed left-handed pitcher Jon Niese on the 15-day disabled list and recalled relief pitcher Greg Burke from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Niese has been diagnosed with a partial tear of the left rotator cuff.

The 26-year-old left Thursday night's game against the Braves in the fourth inning with left shoulder discomfort.

No surgery is planned at this time, but the injury appears to be a serious one.

The sixth-year player, who signed a $30 million extension with the Amazin's last spring, has had a rough season. He started Opening Day against the Padres but has been overshadowed by the likes of Matt Harvey, Dillon Gee and even Zack Wheeler, who made his major-league debut on Tuesday night.

In 14 starts in 2013, Niese is 3-6 with a 4.32 ERA. The 6-foot-4, 217-pounder has struck out 49 and walked 33 in 77 innings pitched.

He struggled on Thursday night before departing, surrendering three runs on eight hits in just 3 1/3 innings.
