Jersey City Mayor Hires Former Gov. Jim McGreevey
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey has been hired by the new mayor of Jersey City.
Mayor Steve Fulop announced Friday that McGreevey will run a city commission dedicated to job creation and training. He will also develop prisoner re-integration programs.
McGreevey has been working for a program that helps female prisoners since resigning from office in November 2004 after announcing "I am a gay American" and admitting to having an extramarital affair with a man.
Fulop told 1010 WINS McGreevey's experience in the field coupled with his connections in the private and public sector make him the ideal person for the job.
"When you put all things together it really creates a narrative to put together a national model," Fulop said. "A lot of people like to view it from a political standpoint, I'm just viewing it from a policy standpoint. I know that Gov. McGreevey has zero interest in running for office, he's stated that, and even when we talked about this position here he was very clear that's not where he wants to go."
Fulop said his decision has not been met with opposition, adding "people are excited and recognize that he's going to be an asset."
Fulop assumed office July 1 after defeating the city's longtime mayor Jerramiah Healy.
The 36-year-old former Goldman Sachs trader has started auditing city agencies and recently released a 155-page "transition report."
