New York City Triathlon To Take Off Sunday

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- After months of training, Sunday is race day for more than 3,000 people participating in the Aquaphor New York City Triathlon.

As WCBS 880's Peter Haskell reported, Zeynep Wironen has never competed in a triathlon, and she has been training since November.

"A lot of hours, a lot of miles, a lot of eating," she said.

A friend convinced Wironen to take on the challenge.

"It's impressive what one could do with their body physically, and emotionally, and everything," she said.

Sam Cardona, 41, said if one is going to participate in a triathlon, New York is the place to do it.

"New York is the best, the course is the best, and the people are the best," he said.

The Olympic distance race consists of a 1,500-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride, and a 10-kilometer run. Participants will swim in the Hudson River, bike along the West Side Highway, and run in Central Park.
