Yankees Place OF Zoilo Almonte On Disabled List

BOSTON (AP) — The injury-riddled New York Yankees have a new addition to the disabled list as outfielder Zoilo Almonte is now sidelined because of a sprained left ankle.

Almonte left Friday night's 4-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox in the fifth inning and was placed on the 15-day DL on Saturday.

He joins captain Derek Jeter, third baseman Alex Rodriguez, first baseman Mark Teixeira (wrist surgery), outfielder Curtis Granderson (broken pinkie) and catcher Francisco Cervelli (broken hand), who are all currently out of action.

Jeter was placed on the disabled list on Friday because of a strained right quadriceps.

New York also designated shortstop Alberto Gonzalez for assignment on Saturday. The Yankees brought up outfielders Melky Mesa and Thomas Neal from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Almonte and Gonzalez on the roster.
