Clifton Man Charged With DWI In Fatal Crash

CLIFTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - Authorities say a suspected drunken driver struck and killed a woman who was trying to get into the back seat of a parked car in northern New Jersey.

Robert Santiago of Clifton is charged with death by auto and driving while intoxicated.

Police tell The Bergen Record that the crash occurred around 2:15 a.m. Sunday on Rutherford Boulevard. The 47-year-old Clifton woman, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Santiago, 26, was not hurt in the crash, but authorities say his car was "completely mangled.''

Santiago remained in custody Sunday afternoon, and it was not known if he had retained a lawyer.
