Undercover Officers Seize 20 Pounds Of Heroin

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Police have announced the seizure of nearly 20 pounds of heroin in Inwood in upper Manhattan.

According to police, members of the 34 Precinct Anti-Crime team were on routine patrol in an unmarked police car near West 207th Street and Sherman Avenue around 8:20 p.m. on Saturday when they saw a man toss a duffel back into the trunk of a double-parked car.

The block is a known drug haven, police said.

The two plainclothes officers got out of their vehicle to approach the man in the driver's seat, identified as Joancis Delacruz-Arias, 26, of Yonkers.

The man who put the duffel bag in the trunk ran off and remains unidentified, police said.

Delacruz-Arias consented to letting police to search the trunk. The duffel bag contained about 25,000 glassine envelopes of heroin, police said.

That amount of heroin has an estimated street value of $750,000, according to police.

Delacruz-Arias was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.

An investigation is ongoing.
