Police: Bronx Shooting Suspect Dies After Beating With Rock

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police are investigating the death of a teenager who they said was severely beaten following a shooting in the Bronx.

Officers were called to East 222nd Street and Schiefflin Avenue at the Edenwald Houses around 3 p.m. Monday.

There they found 17-year-old Antonio Lyles with severe head trauma, police said.

He was taken to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition and arrested on criminal possession of a weapon and assault charges after officers determined the teen had fired a gun at a group of men, police said. A .32 caliber semi-automatic pistol was recovered at the scene, police said.

The investigation further revealed the men chased Lyles after the shooting and struck him several times in the head with a rock, police said. Lyles died Tuesday morning -- nearly 12 hours after the beating, police said. The medical examiner will determine cause of death.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the teen's beating.

Ezequiel Pena, 20, and Stanley Hampton, 18, both of the Bronx, both face charges of gang assault and assault.

The investigation is ongoing.
