As WCBS 880’s Paul Murnane reported, the prefabricated bridge deck is expected to slide into place on the eastbound lanes just east of the Interstate 84/684 interchange.
Officials said the expedited work is expected to bring significant savings.
“We would have most likely built a temporary bridge right alongside, which would have cost money and cost time. We believe we saved about $2 million on this,” New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald told Murnane. “This will be a great example that we will put into our best practices folder where we get much-needed infrastructure repairs done quickly and minimize the impact to the traveling public.”
If everything goes as planned, the entire $10 million project will be nearly complete with a less than 48-hour disruption to traffic.
I-84 East is scheduled to reopen by Sunday afternoon.
A similar 18-hour bridge deck replacement project was done on the westbound lanes last month.
“We learned a lot from our last experience,” McDonald said. “We think that it will go quite smoothly.”
