Man Suspected Of Stealing At Least 4 Cars From Outside Staten Island Gyms

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- While workout warriors were lifting weights, a man was lifting their cars, police say.

As CBS 2's Hazel Sanchez reported, investigators believe Marc Steinberg could be responsible for stealing at least four cars from outside three Staten Island gyms. Police suspect that he swiped keys from wall racks or bowls inside the gyms.

On Oct. 17, Steinberg stole keys for an Audi A4 Quattro from the Synergy Fitness gym in New Springville and then drove off in the luxury car, police said. Two members of Retro Fitness in Tottenville had their cars stolen in similar fashion. Steinberg is also suspected of stealing a car from outside another Retro Fitness in New Springville.

Retro Fitness employees said they believe surveillance video showing a man taking car keys from a wall rack is Steinberg, who remains at large.

"You don't want to work out with your keys in your pocket necessarily," said Jason Picciolo, who works out at Retro Fitness. "You want to be free kind of in a way."

"I'm cautious," added gym member Joanne Meltzer, who said she doesn't leave her keys unattended. "I know what can happen. I don't trust anybody these days."

Retro Fitness is warning members about the thefts on their Facebook page and advising them to keep their belongings in lockers.

"Maybe it was a wake-up call that I was too trusting," one member said.
