NYPD Lieutenant To Bar Owners: Don't Serve Santas

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An NYPD lieutenant is trying to be the grinch to tens of thousands of bar-hopping Santa Clauses.

As 1010 WINS' Eileen Lehpamer reported, Lt. John Cocchi of the Midtown North Precinct has sent letters to 30 bars and nightclubs in Midtown and Hell's Kitchen asking them not to sponsor this year's SantaCon, a day-long bar crawl of revelers dressed as St. Nicholas.

"Having thousands of intoxicated partygoers roam the streets urinating, littering, vomiting and vandalizing will not be tolerated in our neighborhood," Cocchi wrote.

One of the original members of New York City's SantaCon said she can understand the NYPD's reaction.

"Because they're terrified," the woman told Lehpamer. "What are you going to do with 50,000 unruly people? There aren't enough paddy wagons."

But she also said it's a bit of an overreaction.

"The huge percentage of people participating in this are just doing it to dress up like Santa and have a fun day," she said.

This year's SantaCon is scheduled for Dec. 14.
