L.I. Woman Takes 2nd Place In Most Gifted Wrapper Contest

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A Long Island woman who has a knack for wrapping gifts was crowned runner-up of the 2013 Most Gifted Wrapper contest.

As CBS 2's Alex Denis reported Friday, Melinda Cantor, of Deer Park, won $2,500 at the competition hosted by Scotch Brand.

Patricia Zapata, of Kingwood, Texas, beat out Cantor for the top honors and took home a $10,000 prize, 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.

The contest consisted of eight competitors and three timed rounds. Contestants were given oddly shaped items, limited material and asked to put together a beautifully wrapped gift, Denis reported.

Cantor wrapped a Go-Kart.

"We're looking at appearance of the gift, technique of the wrapping, and if comes down to a tie in the numbers. It's always the speed that will win out," head judge Mark Ski said.

And if you think wrapping gifts isn't nerve wracking, add $10,000 to the mix and see what happens.

"You're hands are shaking and you're trying to do this really cool embellishment with tape. And you can't even get your tape to stick to your package," Cantor said.
