Man Hit, Killed By SUV On Major Deegan Expressway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A man was struck and killed early Sunday on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx.

Police found Darrell Carter, 49, of the Bronx lying in the far lane on the southbound Major Deegan, near Exit 5 for East 161st Street and the Macombs Dam Bridge.

Carter had suffered trauma to his body, and was taken to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police determined that Carter had crossed from the northbound lanes of the Major Deegan to the southbound lanes, when he was struck by a Toyota RAV4 sport-utility vehicle headed south.

The driver of the SUV, a man, remained at the scene, police said.

Police have not indicated what Carter was doing crossing an expressway on foot.
