Police: Rape Suspect Impersonated Building Super To Get Into Bronx Woman's Apartment

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Wednesday were asking the public to help them find a suspect who allegedly raped a woman in the Bedford Park section of the Bronx.

Around 1:15 a.m. March 24, the 25-year-old woman was home in her apartment when the suspect knocked on the door. Speaking in Spanish, the suspect told the victim he was the superintendent of the building, and said there was an emergency in the apartment, police said.

The suspect went on to say there was a gas leak and said he had to come in, police said.

When the woman opened the door, the suspect flashed a gun and told the woman to be quiet, as he pistol-whipped the woman in the head and raped her, police said.

The suspect then ran off. The victim was treated and released from an area hospital.

The suspect was described as a dark-skinned Hispanic male standing 6 feet tall and weighing 190 pounds. Police have released a sketch.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
