High School Senior Suspended After Asking Miss America To Prom

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Ask and you shall receive...a suspension.

As CBS 2's Diane Macedo reported Saturday, high school senior Patrick Farves sure has guts but received no glory after he was suspended for interrupting a school assembly and asking Miss America Nina Davuluri to prom.

The pageant winner was speaking at his high school in York, Pennsylvania.

"I had to take that moment, that opportunity and I just stood up and did it," Farves said.

As cell phone video of the incident shows, fellow students went wild and Davuluri seemed flattered.

But school officials were not amused. They had gotten wind of the teen's plan and warned him not to pop the question.

"It wasn't my direct intent to disrespect them, it was more in the moment. I was like, this will be great. It will be funny," Farves said.

Davuluri was at the school to talk about diversity. Certain students had been selected to ask her questions, but Farves just stood up.

"I was nervous, but when you're ready, you're ready. You just grasp that moment," he said.

Afterward, Miss America took to Facebook where she wrote, "I was flattered by the gesture although I am unfortunately unable to attend due to my travel schedule."

She continued, "I later learned of the disciplinary action taken and reached out to the school in hopes that they will reconsider their decision..."

At last check, there were 80 comments under the posting. Most in favor of Farves, like Jessica Bryant who wrote "Oh come on. People need to lighten up."

Judy Chonak wrote "There are kids with drugs and knives -- you are going to beat up on a kid with a little charm and a sense of humor."

As for Farves, he ended his stunt with a victory dance. The question now is whether he'll have someone to dance with him at prom.

The school stands by its decision to suspend Farves, saying the teen knew he was breaking the rules.
