At Least 7 Hurt After Garbage Truck Crashes Through Deli In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- At least seven people were hurt overnight when a garbage truck crashed through the side of a deli in Brooklyn.
It happened at the intersection of Dekalb and Bedford avenues just after 2 a.m. Friday.
Police said a Metropolitan Recycling truck and another vehicle collided and the truck driver lost control, ending up inside the deli, CBS 2's Weijia Jiang reported.
"I heard a boom, that's it," said one witness.
The family that owns the deli lives in the apartments above the store. Family members said they were sleeping at the time of the crash.
"It's a very bad accident. He was driving really fast," said co-owner Abdul Ali. "He was driving too fast, he went inside the building. My cousins, three of them are in the hospital."
Among those hurt was 12-year-old Fowaz Hamood.
"I was scared, couldn't breathe so they took me to the hospital," he said.
The family has operated the deli for more than 30 years and co-owner Abdul Salah said he is worried about paying the bills.
"That's the only place we make a living out of," he said.
But, he said, it could have been worse.
"So blessed nothing happened to anybody," he said. "Everything else will be fixed sooner or later."
The drivers of both vehicles were also hurt and were taken to area hospitals with non life-threatening injuries.
The Department of Buildings will determine if the building is structurally safe and when the family can start rebuilding their business and their home.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
