Puppy Struck By Garbage Truck While Riding On Bike In Queens Heads Home

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Charlie the puppy is one lucky dog.

The 5-month-old pomeranian was riding on a bicycle with his owner Stefanie Campos when they were struck by a garbage truck on Aug. 21.

Firefighters were responding to a water main break nearby and turned onto 43rd Street, according to the FDNY.

Passersby flagged down the fire truck in order to get help for Campos and Charlie who had been hit by a truck on 104th Street and 43rd Avenue.

Once Campos was treated at the scene and placed in an ambulance, firefighters from Ladder 138 took Charlie to Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners, an emergency vet hospital in Queens.

Charlie sustained multiple broken bones and several injuries and underwent surgery on Saturday.

A fundraiser was established to help pay for Charlie's care.
