NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police believe the suspect in the attack and robbery of an 81-year-old woman in her Bronx apartment building believe the suspect is responsible for robbing two other women.
CBS 2’s Tracee Carrasco spoke with the victim, Benita Cuevas, who described the thief as wearing a striped hoodie, partially covering his face.
Cuevas said the man knocked on her door then attacked her in the stairway as she left her apartment building Tuesday morning.
Her daughter, Lucy Reyes, translated the terrifying ordeal.
“That’s when she came down the first flight from this floor to the second floor. That’s when the man grabbed her from behind and pulled her chains off,” Reyes said.
The suspect took off running with Cuevas’ necklace, leaving her scared and roughed up with a six-inch gash on her neck. Reyes said not only did the thief get away with her mother’s jewelry, but she stole her sense of security.
“She’s very independent, but now she fears going out and getting herself whatever she needs,” Reyes said.
Police believe the same man, described as a black male in his 30s, 6-foot and about 200 pounds is responsible for stealing a 49-year-old woman’s cell phone last week at Webster Avenue and 187th Street, and snatching the chain off a 44-year-old woman near 260 E. 188th St.
Reyes said she and her family want this man caught before he strikes again.
Cuevas’ daughter told CBS 2 the building surveillance cameras caught a glimpse of the suspect.
Police are examining those tapes to try and identify the man.
