Gym Takes Fitness To A Whole New Level With 1,100-Calorie Workout

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A fitness routine that claims to burn over 1,000 calories per class may just be the toughest workout in New York City.

Most intense fitness classes burn about 600 calories in an hour. This routine doubles that.

As CBS 2's Emily Smith reported, unless you've done 80 to 100 burpees for a warm up, you've never done anything like this in a fitness class.

The co-founder of Epic Hybrid Training on West 38th Street, Alex Nicholas, calls the shots during the class called Grynd.

Though the sweat session burns around 1,100 calories per class, one Grynd attendee said it's "usually more because it puts you into a state where you burning calories and oxygen well into the rest of the day."

So what can you expect from this intense workout regime? You'll find yourself upside down, hoisting weights and crawling, not to mention using monkey bars that move. And if you fall off, you're "punished" with more burpees.

Because you're burning so many calories, nutritionist Alissa Rumsey, with New York Presbyterian Hospital, says a 140-pound person could eat 2,500 calories a day -- almost double the normal amount.

Just be sure to include plenty of protein, carbohydrates and fat within an hour after the class, Smith reported.

"Whether its a slice of whole wheat toast with peanut butter and a banana or if it's some Greek yogurt with some berries and a little honey," Rumsey said.

Personal trainer Eric Davis called it the new Cross Fit or Soul Cycle -- a total craze.

"Yea I'll probably be jumping into it," he said. "I try to jump into everything."

It's an intense routine with moments of desperation, but it promises to deliver a toned physique and energy as long as you've got an hour and some serious will power, Smith reported.
