New Jersey Brothers Become Fathers Within Minutes

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two New Jersey brothers became fathers for the first time within six minutes of each other.

Marty Murren's wife was supposed to give birth a week after Michael Murren's wife. But that didn't pan out last Friday.

Relatives split up between two hospitals and Michael's wife Nanette said there was a bit of a competition in the delivery rooms to see whose baby would be born first.

"It was a big race to the finish," she told 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet. "The nurses and the doctors were all in competition and everybody -- our families had split up at each hospital, were calling each other trying to find out 'what time, what time.' It was fun."

Michael and Nanette's daughter Olivia Murren was born at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston at 10:23 p.m. Marty and his wife Jamie's son Thomas Murren was born at 10:29 p.m. at Morristown Medical Center.

"We thought we were having him a couple days earlier," Jamie said. "It just didn't work out that way."

The family says all competition aside, they're thankful to have two happy and healthy babies.
