Report: Yanks Don't Intend To Go After Sandoval, Scherzer, Lester, Shields
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Looking for more big splashes this offseason, Yankees fans?
They may not be coming.
According to the New York Daily News, the Bombers do not plan to go after top free agents Pablo Sandoval, Max Scherzer, Jon Lester and James Shields.
New York is taking a more conservative approach. The newspaper reports that general manager Brian Cashman is focused on re-signing third baseman Chase Headley and starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy.
The free agents was not eligible to receive one-year, $15.3 million qualifying offers because they were traded during the season, though it's unlikely that they would have been extended such offers under any circumstance.
Headley did an admirable job for New York after coming over in a trade in July. The 30-year-old third baseman batted .262 with six home runs and 17 RBIs in 58 games and played his usual outstanding defense.
Alex Rodriguez is set to come back after missing all of 2014, though it remains to be seen if he'll be able to play the field on a consistent basis. He might see considerable time at designated hitter, and potentially at first base.
McCarthy, 31, was rock solid after being acquired from the D'Backs. The right-hander went 7-5 with a 2.89 ERA in 14 starts with New York.
The Yankees spent $471 million in free agency ahead of last season, but failed to make the playoffs for the second straight year.
The current crop of Yankees free agents -- in addition to Headley and McCarthy -- includes David Robertson, Hiroki Kuroda, Chris Capuano, Stephen Drew, Rich Hill, Ichiro Suzuki and Chris Young.
Robertson was extended a qualifying offer on Monday, though he's expected to turn it down.
