Police: ATM Stolen After Pickup Truck Slams Into Newark Store

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police in Newark are looking for whoever ran a pickup truck into a downtown convenience store and made off with a cash machine.

The robbery occurred early Thursday morning at the store on Park Place, across from Military Park and a block from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

Surveillance footage shows a truck slam into the front of the Park Place store as glass flies everywhere. The truck backed into the store four times, before two men ran inside and grabbed the ATM.

As CBS2's Alice Gainer reported, one guy drove while the other ran away.

"Saw in the front, the canopy and the frame was down, so I figured something was wrong," store owner Nil Patel said.

Since the incident happened at 3:20 a.m. Patel didn't know about it until her showed up for work.

"Got in and saw the horrible things. The whole thing, the front door, the whole frame, metal gate, everything down, ceiling, floor, so much messed up," he said.

Patel said that he has been robbed before, but that this  time the thieves made off with about $3,000.

A white pickup truck believed to be involved in the crime was located by police Thursday afternoon in nearby Hillside. The truck had severe rear-end damage. Police also found the ATM, which had been broken into. It was not immediately known how much money was taken.

Newark police say the pickup truck had been reported stolen.

Workers were busy reinstalling the store's front door Thursday afternoon.

Aside from the money that was taken, the robbery resulted in thousands of dollars in damage to the store.
