YAPHANK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Suffolk County is getting a second area code.
The state Public Service Commission approved the new code on Thursday, saying the existing 631 code is running out of assignable telephone numbers.READ MORE: Mayor De Blasio Announces Vaccine Mandate For All New York City Municipal Workers, Including First Responders
The new area code, which has not yet been determined, will be activated in late 2016.

The 631 area code was split off from 516 in 1999.
