Police: Man Hospitalized After Shooting, Stabbing Self In Ewing, New Jersey

EWING, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities said Tuesday that a New York City man was hospitalized in Ewing, New Jersey, after he allegedly shot himself in the face, knifed himself in the abdomen and tried to slit his throat with a spatula while visiting his girlfriend's home.

Ewing police say the 48-year-old man began "acting strangely" late Monday night and ran from the home. He then went to another nearby home and asked to use the phone, police said.

An elderly woman there refused his request and tried to shut the door, but authorities said the man forced his way in and grabbed the spatula and a butcher's knife.

An elderly man then came out of a bedroom with a loaded .357 handgun, and a struggle ensued. The older man fired two shots that missed the other man, who soon got control of the gun.

The two elderly people were not injured, police said.
