Dog Found Abandoned In Cage On Long Island Finds New Home

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A dog that was found abandoned inside a cage on the side of the road in Brentwood last month has been adopted.

The male Silky/Yorkie terrier-type dog was covered in feces and urine and was extremely matted when it was found on Candlewood Road on Dec. 21. Veterinarians determined he was emaciated and had open sores on his body.

The dog was near death and needed aggressive medical attention to save its life, the Suffolk County SPCA said.

The dog was taken to Atlantic Coast Veterinary Specialists, where he was nicknamed Bean, and nursed back to health.

Bean was 4.6 pounds when he was found and now weighs a healthy 11.5 pounds, Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross said.

One of the SPCA officers who worked on the case has adopted Bean, Gross said.

"It brings a happy ending to a very sad story," Gross told 1010 WINS. "It's going to have a long good life ahead of it."

The SPCA is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722.
